A Night of Scottish Tradition: Lac La Biche Marks Robbie Burns Celebration

by Alyssa Davis

The legacy of Scottish poet and lyricist Robert Burns was celebrated at the fifth annual Robbie Burns Dinner and Celebration on March 8 at the Royal Canadian Legion, McGrane Branch #28 in Lac La Biche.

Burns, who lived from 1759 to 1796, is remembered for his influential poetry and songs, including the beloved New Year’s anthem Auld Lang Syne, as well as A Red, Red Rose and A Man’s a Man for A’ That.

An Evening of Scottish Tradition

The event began at 5:30 p.m. with cocktails, followed by a traditional Scottish dinner. One of the highlights was the ceremonial piping in of the haggis, a key element of Burns Night celebrations. Molly Fyten, who has been organizing the event since its inception in 2020, played the bagpipes for the occasion, while her mother, Ruth Fyten, carried the haggis.

Haggis, Scotland’s national dish, is a savory pudding traditionally made from sheep’s liver, heart, and lungs. It holds deep cultural significance and is a staple of Robbie Burns celebrations worldwide.

Speeches, Music, and the Address to the Haggis

The evening featured speeches from guests and local dignitaries, as well as performances of traditional Scottish music. One of the most anticipated moments each year is the Address to the Haggis, a recital of Burns’ famous poem in honor of the dish.

This tradition was carried out by Angus Campbell, a native of Scotland who now resides in Fort McMurray. Campbell has been reciting the poem at Robbie Burns events for nearly four decades and enjoys sharing the poet’s legacy with others.

“It’s good to impart why Scotland reveres Robert Burns so much,” Campbell said. He noted that Burns is especially admired for his deep respect for hardworking, everyday people and his criticism of the social elites of his time.

The annual event serves as both a tribute to Burns’ literary contributions and a celebration of Scottish culture, bringing together the local community to honor one of Scotland’s most enduring figures.
