Penticton Arts Council Hosts Poetry and Syilx Okanagan Story Reading Event

by Alyssa Davis

The Penticton & District Community Arts Council (PDCAC) is inviting the community to a special poetry and storytelling event this Saturday, March 15. The event will feature a captikw story reading by Taylor Lezard as part of the Incredible Journeys exhibition by the Ullus Collective.

The Okanagan Nation Alliance defines captikw as a collection of teachings that shape Syilx Okanagan laws, customs, and values. These stories guide how people should interact with the land and preserve traditions for future generations. They are deeply woven into Syilx Okanagan culture and language, playing a key role in keeping traditions alive.

The event will take place at 1 p.m. in Leir House Cultural Centre’s PDCAC Gallery I. It is free and open to people of all ages.

“We hope to bring more events like this in the coming weeks in partnership with the Ullus Collective, featuring their member artists,” the PDCAC shared in a news release.

About Taylor Lezard
Taylor Lezard, a 2Spirit multimedia artist, poet, and Nsyilxcn language learner, will lead the storytelling session. Lezard has Syilx and Secwepemc roots and currently lives in Snpinktn (Penticton).

For those interested in experiencing more local art and culture, PDCAC Galleries are open Wednesday to Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
