The University of Southern Indiana (USI) is set to host acclaimed poet and educator Carlos Andrés Gómez as the keynote speaker for National Poetry Month. His presentation will take place at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15, at the USI Performance Center. The event is open to the public and free of charge.
A Renowned Voice in Poetry and Performance
Gómez, a Colombian American poet, speaker, actor, and educator from New York City, has made a significant impact in the literary and performance world. He is the author of Fractures, Hijito, Circling Fatherhood, and the memoir Man Up. His work has been featured on Def Poetry Jam, Verses and Flow, and in Spike Lee’s film Inside Man.
His achievements include the Sandy Crimmins Prize, the Atlanta Review Prize, and a Foreword INDIES Gold Medal. He has also worked alongside singer John Legend on Senior Orientation, a program aimed at combating high school bullying.
Engaging with USI Students and the Community
In addition to his keynote address, Gómez will lead a Creative Writing Workshop for USI students and participate in Sips and Sonnets, a literary event, before his main presentation.
