Kazakhstan commemorated the 90th anniversary of renowned poet Tumanbai Moldagaliyev on March 20. Celebrated for his evocative poetry about love and nature, Moldagaliyev also played a key role in shaping the country’s musical and literary heritage. His words continue to inspire generations, cementing his place in Kazakh culture.

A Life Dedicated to Poetry

Born in 1935 in the village of Zharsu in the Almaty Region, Moldagaliyev discovered his passion for poetry while studying philology at Kazakh State University. His literary journey began in 1954 with the publication of his first poem, To the Ukrainian Girl. Three years later, he released his debut poetry collection, Student Notebook.

Throughout his prolific career, he published more than 40 poetry collections. In addition to his original works, he translated the poetry of Russian and Western literary figures, making global classics accessible to Kazakh readers.

A Legacy in Music

Moldagaliyev’s influence extended beyond poetry. He was a gifted lyricist whose words gave life to some of Kazakhstan’s most beloved songs. His collaborations with legendary composers like Nurgisa Tlendiyev, Shamshi Kaldayakov, and Aset Beyseuov resulted in timeless melodies that remain cherished today.

Some of his most famous works include Birds’ Song, Birds Are Coming Back, In the Arms of Happiness, and Spring Calling. These songs continue to hold a special place in Kazakh music, showcasing his lyrical brilliance.

The Poet Behind Kazakhstan’s First National Anthem

He co-wrote the country’s first national anthem, Zharalgan Namystan Kaharman Halykpyz, alongside Kadyr Myrza-Ali, Zhadyra Daribaeva, and Muzafar Alimbayev. This anthem served as the nation’s official song from 1992 until 2006 when it was replaced by My Kazakhstan.

A Lasting Impact
