Sarah Colina, an amateur poet nearing the end of her life, has achieved a lifelong dream by publishing her first poetry book. Colina, who is currently receiving end-of-life care at Ashgate Hospice in Chesterfield, has written poetry for over 40 years.
The 60-year-old, originally from Nether Edge in Sheffield, began writing poems as a teenager but never published them despite support from friends and family. Now, she has released 60 copies of her poetry collection, Flying Free. Ten copies will be signed and given to loved ones, while the remaining books will be sold as paperbacks to raise funds for the hospice.
Colina has been battling chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) for 20 years. She entered Ashgate Hospice’s Inpatient Unit in early July, initially for palliative care, but transitioned to end-of-life care as her condition worsened.
Reflecting on her achievement from her hospice bed, Colina said, “The book is dedicated to my mum, who has always believed in me. She would always say, ‘You’re a fantastic poet, Sarah. Get it published.’ When I was younger, I planned to publish eventually, but it never happened until my wonderful daughter-in-law, Katie, made it possible.”
Katie helped find a publishing company and turned the idea into a reality within three weeks. Colina expressed hope that her book would be well received and that people would enjoy her poems.
Previously, Colina worked as a tutor at the Burton Street Foundation in Sheffield. She was diagnosed with COPD years ago, but her condition worsened significantly about three years ago. Two months ago, she was given six months to a year to live.
Despite her prognosis, Colina remains optimistic. “I’m not frightened. The hospice staff has been incredibly supportive,” she said. “If someone is holding my hand, that’s all that matters.”
The book’s cover features a budgie illustration that Colina drew when she was 15. She hopes the book will raise funds for the hospice, ensuring future patients receive the same care she has.
Colina noted, “Some poems are dark, but some are humorous. I hope they provide insight into people’s inner selves and that readers interpret them in their own way.”
She praised the hospice staff for their compassion, stating, “Every person here, from the cleaner to the main doctor, has been kind. They don’t see themselves as having different statuses. They’re all just humans.”
