The artistic contributions of the late poet, writer, and artist Peng Shih Lin are celebrated in a new book titled A Collection of Peng Shih Lin’s Artwork. This tribute comes from her five children, who aim to honor her legacy.
The book includes a selection of artworks and poetry from the scholar, known by her pen name, Cui Yuan. Her youngest son, Leong Chao Seong, took on the task of preserving her works after her death in 2004. “We began compiling her works in 2010,” he said. “The book took over five years to complete, involving compilation, translation, and editing.”
This bilingual volume, featuring both Chinese and English texts, was edited by the late Dr. Lee Kean Yau, a former lecturer in Chinese Literature at New Era University College (NEUC). It showcases around 100 pieces, including calligraphy, poems, paintings, and Chinese seals.
Born in Hunan, China, in 1923, Peng moved to Ipoh, Perak, in 1950 after marrying tin miner Leong Sam Yuan. She taught Chinese literature at SMJK Perempuan Perak, later serving as its headmistress from 1954 to 1978. Her literary works include classical poetry collections such as Selected Poems of Ju Cui Yuan Shi and essays like Ye Chuang Xian Hua and Shu Deng Xu Yu.
Leong noted the challenges of translating Peng’s classical Chinese texts. “The language often drew from ancient formal styles, making modern translations difficult. Dr. Lee worked hard to find the closest interpretations,” he explained.
The book was launched by Deputy Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Liew Chin Tong at a commercial center in Ara Damansara, Petaling Jaya. “Very few people excel in poetry, art, and calligraphy, but Peng was profoundly talented in all three,” Liew remarked. He added that her works reflect the evolving landscape of Ipoh city over time.
Attendees, including Peng’s friends, students, and close acquaintances, shared fond memories of her. Assoc Prof Dr. Fan Pik Wah, chairman of the Writer’s Association of Chinese Medium of Malaysia and from Universiti Malaya (UM), emphasized the book’s role in preserving Chinese cultural heritage. “Peng hoped her creations would be appreciated by future generations,” she said. “Her work showcases not only her passion but also her connections to her hometown in China and the local community in Malaysia.”
Star Media Group Bhd CEO Chan Seng Fatt also attended the launch, praising the book and Peng’s achievements. “For any writer or artist, having their works preserved is a dream. Leong has made that dream a reality for his mother,” he stated. Chan highlighted the book’s significance in the context of the 50th anniversary of Malaysia-China diplomatic relations.
