The Baywash Lounge buzzed with creativity last Saturday evening as Afropolitan Explosive, a local arts organization, hosted its Chords and Chill event.

The evening’s highlight was a series of live performances from local musicians. The diverse lineup kept the audience captivated, featuring soulful acoustic sets, energetic jam sessions, and powerful poetry readings. Three local poets delivered their own original Isizulu poems, impressing the crowd with their unique and passionate performances.

One of the standout moments came when local singer Diva performed a traditional Umakhweyana musical piece, inviting the audience to join in the singing. Her performance, accompanied by drums and guitar, was a crowd favorite.

Nobuntu Mhalmbi, the event organizer and director of Afropolitan Explosive, emphasized the importance of supporting local talent. “Events like these are crucial for emerging artists. They allow them to refine their craft, showcase their abilities, and receive valuable feedback, which prepares them for future success,” she said.

Afropolitan Explosive aims to build a creative community that shares stories, hosts artistic events, and creates job opportunities in the Amajuba District and beyond. Since 2011, the organization has been involved in various projects, including workshops and film initiatives.

“We want every artist in Newcastle to succeed, and we hope the community continues to embrace the incredible creativity we have,” Mhalmbi added.

She also noted a growing interest in Newcastle in the teaching of local history, sparking further engagement with the arts.
