Queen Anne’s School in Reading celebrated National Poetry Day with a special visit from 2012 Poetry World Slam Champion, Harry Baker, a poet and mathematician known for blending the two disciplines in his work.
With this year’s theme being “Counting,” Baker’s unique talent for incorporating mathematical concepts into poetry made him the perfect guest for the occasion. The event was a collaborative effort between the school’s English and Maths departments, highlighting the intersection of creativity and logic.
During the visit, Baker performed for students, sharing his distinctive fusion of math and poetry. His performance captivated the audience and sparked a deeper interest in both subjects among the students.
Queen Anne’s School has a tradition of inviting renowned poets to speak, including figures like Patience Agbade, John Agard, Mary-Jean Chan, Carol Ann Duffy, and Simon Armitage. Harry Baker now joins this prestigious list, performing some of his popular pieces, such as “Paper People” and “Dinosaur Love,” much to the enjoyment of the younger students.
Following his performance, Baker answered students’ questions, offering insights into his journey as a poet and the experiences that shaped his work. His visit left students inspired, many eager to try their hand at writing poetry or even participate in a local poetry slam.
