Local Author-Poet Mike Katko to Honor Veterans Day at Hans Bethe House

The community is invited to honor Veterans Day with poetry at a reading featuring local author and Armed Forces veteran Mike Katko. The event, titled “Poetry of War,” will take place on Monday, November 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the historic Hans Bethe House, located at 1350 Bathtub Row.

Katko will use the art of poetry to honor fallen veterans and share their stories. He is a dedicated veteran, entrepreneur, and educator with extensive experience in various fields. As a U.S. Armed Forces veteran, he has worked as a business owner, restaurant entrepreneur, and home builder. He also serves as the Board Chairman for the New Mexico Instructional Materials Commission and the Board of Occupational Therapy.

In education, Katko has more than 20 years of experience as a teacher, coach, principal, and adjunct professor. He previously coordinated community education at the University of New Mexico – Los Alamos. With a master’s degree in Educational Administration focusing on at-risk youth, he was also awarded a fellowship from the University of Chicago, specializing in public policy concerning poverty and inequality.

Katko is passionate about social issues, particularly the cause of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW). He has published two books: Skies and Other Poems and Big Medicine Pretty Water, showcasing his love for poetry and storytelling.
