Poet Lozan Yamolky will headline the Electric Mermaid live reading event at Char’s Landing in Port Alberni on Wednesday, October 30.
Yamolky has received numerous accolades, including the Distinguished Poet Award from Writer International Network Canada in 2018. Her poem “Peace Treaty” won first prize at the 2019 International Rabindranath Tagore Poetry Contest.
Originally from Baghdad, Yamolky is of Kurdish descent and immigrated to Canada in 1995. She is the author of three poetry books: I’m No Hero, Counting Waves, and Dreamers Needed.
After suffering a traumatic brain injury in a motor vehicle accident, Yamolky temporarily stepped back from the poetry community. The injury affected her ability to write and read. Thanks to the support of multiple therapists, she is recovering and is grateful to return to her community of poets and audiences who appreciate poetry.
Currently, she is working on her fourth collection, titled Hush, Let the Silence Speak.
The evening will be hosted by Derek Hanebury, who will guide the event along with Yamolky and other authors during the open mic segment. Doors open at 5:30 PM, and the open mic runs from 6 to 8 PM. Admission is a suggested donation of $10. To pre-register for the readers’ list or to request an optional Zoom link, visit the Char’s Landing website.
