An art exhibition celebrating the life of 18th-century Gaelic poet Rob Donn Mackay will open at the Kyle Centre in Tongue on November 1. The exhibition, titled “Rob Donn Country: 300 Years of Rob Donn Mackay,” pays tribute to the poet from Sutherland.

North Coast Helping Hands has partnered with Strathnaver Museum to present this exhibition in honor of Befriending Week 2024, which runs from November 1 to November 7.

A spokesperson for the event stated, “It is a fabulous collection of work by local artists who have come together to celebrate and remember the life of Rob Donn.”

The Scottish Poetry Society has noted that Rob Donn is “arguably as important to poetry in the Gaelic language as Robert Burns is to poetry in Scots.” Despite being unable to read or write, he dictated his poetry from memory during the later years of his life.

The exhibition will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today, as well as next Tuesday and Thursday.

On Saturday, November 9, well-known Caithness poet and playwright George Gunn will host an afternoon of poetry at the Kyle Centre to continue the celebration of Befriending Week.

Everyone is invited to participate in the event, with opportunities to recite their own poems or select a favorite poem to be read aloud.
