Traveling Tales, a collaborative project run by three New Travellers, will offer free art and poetry workshops in the southwest of England and London this spring.
The workshops will focus on creating poetic tapestries inspired by life on the road. “We’ll start by writing poetry together, using writing exercises and prompts,” said Maddie Wakeling, a performing artist and writer. “There will also be an opportunity to write collaboratively with others, if you’d like.”
Participants will then paint their favorite lines or words, or even the entire verse, onto fabric to create a shared tapestry.
Traveling Tales will visit Glastonbury, Bristol, and London, with the goal of creating a tapestry that will travel with them and be added to by different roadside communities along the way.
“The workshops are free, but we ask people to book a ticket so we can ensure enough resources and snacks for everyone,” added Maddie.
Workshop Dates:
- February 16: Bristol
- February 22: Whitechapel, London
- March 1: Glastonbury
In addition to the workshops, Maddie Wakeling will tour with Roadside, a solo theatre show that explores the rise of New Traveller culture, born from festivals and free parties in the Southwest. The play features testimony from New Travellers in the region and is based on Maddie’s own experiences as a New Traveller artist.
Roadside will be performed at:
- Trinity Centre, Bristol: March 28 and 30
- Cockpit Theatre, London: April 4-6
