Tamil Poet and Speaker Nandalala Passes Away at 69

Tamil poet, writer, and public speaker Nandalala passed away on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at the age of 69 due to health complications.

He had been receiving treatment at a private hospital in Bengaluru after undergoing heart valve replacement surgery on February 1. Despite ongoing medical care, he passed away on Tuesday morning. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

A Life Dedicated to Tamil Literature

Born as Neduncheliyan Singaravelu in Kunnandarkoil, Pudukkottai, Nandalala was an influential figure in Tamil literature. A retired bank employee, he was actively involved in the literary and cultural scene in Tiruchi and beyond. He served as the state vice-president of the Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers’ and Artists’ Association and was a general council member of the Tamil Nadu Iyal Isai Nataka Mandram.

Nandalala was widely respected for his eloquence and efforts to promote Tamil literature. His recently published book, Tiruchirappalli: Oorum Varalarum, is a significant work that explores the historical and cultural heritage of the region.

Public Homage and Final Rites

His mortal remains will be brought to his residence in Tiruchi, where the public can pay their respects on Wednesday. The final rites will take place on March 6, according to family members.

Tributes from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed his condolences, praising Nandalala’s talent and dedication to Tamil literature. He recalled the writer’s active participation in book fairs and discussions, as well as his deep connection to his hometown, Tiruchi.

“Nandalala had great respect for Periyar, Anna, and deep affection for Kalaignar,” Stalin noted, referring to social reformer Periyar E.V. Ramasamy, former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai, and former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. He added that Nandalala was made a general council member of the Tamil Nadu Iyal Isai Nataka Mandram to ensure that his ideas benefited Tamil society.

Stalin extended his condolences to Nandalala’s family, fellow writers, and Tamil literature enthusiasts.
