A 41-year-old woman was found dead Thursday night on the rooftop of a Bronx building near Yankee Stadium, authorities said.
Jane Hunter was discovered naked, unconscious, and unresponsive around 7:30 p.m. atop an apartment building located on River Avenue near East 158th Street in the Concourse neighborhood. Police and family members confirmed her identity.
According to officials, the woman appeared to have suffered trauma consistent with a fall. Emergency medical services pronounced her dead at the scene.
Her mother, Margaret Hunter, told News 12 that it was unclear whether Jane had climbed to the rooftop herself or if someone else had taken her there.
“She might have been up there herself, or someone took her up there,” Margaret Hunter said.
The grieving mother added that Jane had struggled with addiction and mental health issues, expressing frustration that the system had not provided the support she needed. Neighbors also voiced concerns about security at the building.
Relatives remembered Jane as a talented poet with a kind heart. “She was impossibly kind… But for the first time in decades, she may finally be at peace,” they said in a statement to News 12. “Her name was Jane Hunter, and she was loved.”
As of Friday, authorities had not yet determined whether foul play was involved. The city’s medical examiner’s office will conduct an official investigation to confirm the cause of death.
