Applications are now open for the 2025-2026 West Valley Youth Poet Laureate competition, hosted by the WHAM Art Center. This annual program honors young poets and their contributions to the arts while providing a platform for creativity and leadership.
“This marks our third year celebrating youth poetry in the West Valley,” said Maggie Gautier, WHAM’s literary arts manager. “We’re excited to partner with Danielle Edgerton, curriculum specialist for the Dysart School District, whose involvement will help spread the word to more students. We’re also honored to have her as one of our judges.”
The selected Youth Poet Laureate will collaborate with arts and culture commissions in Surprise, Peoria, Buckeye, Glendale, Avondale, and Goodyear. Local high school districts will also participate, giving young poets wider recognition.
The program is designed for students who love writing and leadership. Participants will improve their public speaking and recitation skills while gaining leadership experience through civic engagement. The winner will be invited to speak at special events and work with WHAM to promote poetry and artistic expression throughout the community.
