The House of Poetry, part of the Sharjah Department of Culture, hosted a special poetry evening on March 18, 2025, to mark World Poetry Day.
A Night of Poetry and Reflection
The event featured distinguished poets, including Dr. Aisha Al Shamsi from the UAE, Dr. Mohammad Said Al Atiq from Syria, and Yusuf Abdulaziz from Jordan. The evening was moderated by Raghëd Jatl.
A large audience attended, including poetry enthusiasts, critics, academics, and poets. Among them was Mohammad Abdullah Al Buraiki, director of the House of Poetry, who described the venue as a cornerstone of poetic expression in the region.
Opening Remarks on Poetry’s Influence
Raghëd Jatl opened the evening by emphasizing the significance of the Arabic language and poetry. He acknowledged the unwavering support of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, in fostering literary arts. Jatl also praised the Sharjah Department of Culture for its efforts in promoting poetry year-round.
Powerful Poetic Performances
The poetry readings began with Dr. Mohammad Said Al Atiq, who dedicated verses to the Ruler of Sharjah and the city’s growing reputation as a poetry hub. His recitations carried strong humanitarian themes, including heartfelt dedications to grandparents and parents, resonating deeply with the audience.
Dr. Aisha Al Shamsi followed, sharing poetry rooted in spirituality and faith. She read selections from The Mantle of Meaning, a collection that touched on deep personal and universal themes.
The evening concluded with Yusuf Abdulaziz, whose poetry featured a symbolic and thought-provoking style. His mix of classical and free verse captivated listeners, particularly with his moving piece, The Mother’s Image.
Recognizing Poetic Excellence
As the event came to a close, Mohammad Al Buraiki honored the poets and the presenter for their contributions. The celebration reaffirmed the House of Poetry’s role as a cultural hub, bringing together voices that reflect the depth and richness of Arabic literature.
