The Carson Valley Arts Council is set to host two special events featuring Nevada’s State Poet Laureate, Shaun T. Griffin, on March 27.
Griffin, appointed by Governor Joe Lombardo on May 1, 2024, will serve as Nevada’s poet laureate until April 30, 2026. Throughout his career, he has contributed significantly to literature through his poetry, translations, and work in creative writing education.
A Distinguished Career in Poetry and Service
Griffin has authored several poetry collections, including Bathing in the River of Ashes, The Monastery of Stars, This is What the Desert Surrenders, and Woodsmoke, Wind, and the Peregrine. In addition to writing, he has served on the Nevada Arts Council, edited and translated poetry, and led creative writing workshops—including sessions for inmates at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center.
Beyond poetry, Griffin has worked extensively in community service. He co-founded Community Chest, a nonprofit agency supporting families and children, and served as its executive director. He was also the founding director of Nevada’s homeless youth education office, demonstrating his commitment to social advocacy.
Engaging the Community Through Poetry
On March 27, Griffin will start the day by leading a creative writing workshop for students in Tonya Charles’ class at Douglas High School. Later, from 1-2 p.m., he will hold a public poetry reading at the Carson Valley Arts Council (1572 US Hwy 395, Minden). During the event, he will read from his works, discuss his role as poet laureate, and share insights on the significance of poetry in everyday life.
The event offers a unique opportunity for the community to connect with one of Nevada’s most celebrated literary figures and gain a deeper appreciation for poetry’s impact.
