PORT ERIN, Isle of Man—Australian slam poets Sarah Temporal and Damien Becker will perform their acclaimed spoken word show at the Erin Arts Centre on Saturday, September 7, at 7:30 p.m. The event, titled “Otherworlds, Underworlds, Wonderworlds,” is presented by Penny Productions and will celebrate the sea through poetry and performance.
The performance features a unique cross-hemisphere collaboration between Northern and Southern poets. Sarah Temporal, currently touring Australia with her debut collection Tight Bindings, will also bring her book to Europe, including stops in London, Edinburgh, Paris, Iceland, and the Isle of Man.
The couple’s connection to the Isle of Man began in 2019 via Instagram, when they interacted with local poet Jackie Morrey-Grace. This led to Morrey-Grace performing her first poetry publication, On Ravensdale Hill, via Zoom for Poets Out Loud, an arts initiative run by Temporal in New South Wales during the pandemic. The positive reception of this performance sparked their interest in visiting the island.
“Otherworlds, Underworlds, Wonderworlds” will include Penny Productions’ signature blend of spoken word experimentation. The show will feature darkly feminine poems, chants, chimes, gongs, and songs by the newly formed group Daughter of Sea.
Damien Becker expressed excitement about the performance, stating, “We’re thrilled to bring our poetry from Australia—sun, surf, rainforest—to the Isle of Man. Collaborating on this show is a special opportunity for us.”
Penny Productions is also excited about the show, with the team praising both poets for their work that explores Australia’s rich history and culture. “To have this brought to our little island is a true treat,” said a spokesperson from Penny Productions. “It’s a great chance to enjoy some spoken word fun and Soundology gong action that our audience loves.”
Signed copies of Sarah Temporal’s book will be available for purchase at the event. Tickets are priced at £15.
