Two students from Yuma are set to have their poems featured in an upcoming publication by the American Library of Poetry.

John and Jose Aguilar, who attend Harvest Preparatory Academy, submitted their work to the 2024 American Library of Poetry Contest. Their poems were selected for inclusion in a special anthology titled Gifted, which highlights student poetry. The book is scheduled to be released this fall.

Their mother, Mayra Esquivel, expressed pride in her sons’ achievement. “It’s an incredible accomplishment,” she said. “Not everyone gets published, and their poems were good enough to be chosen. I hope this encourages them to keep writing. It shows them what they can achieve when they believe in themselves.”

Both boys will receive a copy of the book and have shared their intentions to continue writing poetry.
