The CAPE Center in Cape Canaveral has become a new hub for poetry lovers, hosting a monthly Poetry Night on the fourth Wednesday of each month. The event begins at 7 p.m. and takes place at 105 Polk Ave. It is free for both attendees and performers.
Lauren White, the event organizer, brings her experience from hosting poetry events in Orlando and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in arts leadership and cultural management at Colorado State University, where she is required to complete two internships. White launched the first Poetry Night in July.
“The feedback we received after the first event was overwhelmingly positive. People were really excited to have something like this in the area,” White said.
According to the City of Cape Canaveral’s website, Poetry Night is open to individuals aged 16 and up. The event allows for mature content, with performers given the freedom to choose their topics.
“They can come to read, perform spoken word, or even sing,” White explained. “We had people singing at the last event.”
The event welcomes participants of all experience levels.
“I encourage everyone to do whatever makes them comfortable,” White added.
One of the performers at the August 28 event was Emmett Green, who met White in Orlando.
“I wanted to be a part of this,” Green said, emphasizing that he finds vulnerability in his performances essential to living the life he desires.
The next Poetry Night will be held on September 25, with future events scheduled for October 23 and November 27.
White encourages everyone, whether performing or just attending, to embrace the experience of sharing.
“Share yourself,” White urged. “You’ll be surprised at how receptive people are to that vulnerability, to hearing your story, and how it brings everyone together.”
