Mayor Michelle Wu and the Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture have announced that the City of Boston is now accepting applications and nominations for the next Poet Laureate. This role, established in 2008, has been a key part of Boston’s creative community, aiming to engage residents in the world of literary arts. The current Poet Laureate, Porsha Olayiwola, has held the position since 2019 and will be transitioning to teaching at Emerson College and opening a bookstore in Fields Corner.

“One of the most special roles in our city is now open,” said Mayor Wu. “The Poet Laureate plays an important role in our artistic community. I encourage anyone passionate about literary arts to apply and look forward to seeing how the next Poet Laureate will contribute through their creativity.”

The Poet Laureate serves as an ambassador for Boston’s literary scene, working to promote poetry and inspire reflection in the daily lives of residents through public events and the written word.

“Boston’s Poet Laureate is responsible for creating spaces where we can connect and express our creativity,” said Kara Elliott-Ortega, Chief of Arts and Culture. “Porsha Olayiwola has used her talent to showcase the beauty and complexity of Boston, and we’re excited to see how the next Poet Laureate will continue this work.”

Since the program began, Boston has had three Poet Laureates: Sam Cornish, Danielle Legros Georges, and Porsha Olayiwola. Olayiwola will end her tenure with a workshop series this fall, hosted with the Boston Public Library.

Reflecting on her time as Poet Laureate, Olayiwola said, “It’s been a dream come true to serve as Boston’s Poet Laureate. I hope I’ve contributed to the city’s literary scene and helped expand the possibilities of poetry.”

The role of Poet Laureate is a four-year, ceremonial position. Key responsibilities include presenting at civic events, organizing public poetry programs, enhancing poetry initiatives in schools and libraries, and mentoring the Youth Poet Laureate.

Applicants for the position must be at least 21 years old, have lived in Boston for at least two years, and be active as professional poets. Their work should reflect the vibrancy of Boston’s life and culture.

The selection process will be managed by a panel of literary professionals, who will review applications and interview finalists. The new Poet Laureate will be announced in January 2025, with a term starting on July 1, 2025, and ending in 2029.

Candidates interested in learning more about the position can attend information sessions hosted by Porsha Olayiwola and the Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture on September 6 and September 12, 2024. The deadline to apply is September 30, 2024, at 5 p.m. Applications can be submitted online or by mail, with digital entries preferred.
