Grammy Award-nominated poet Aja Monet will take the stage at SCADshow this October, performing her renowned surrealist blues poetry. Her debut album, when the poems do what they do, explores themes of Black resistance, love, and the ongoing pursuit of joy. Released to critical acclaim, it earned her a nomination for Best Spoken Word Poetry Album at the 2024 Grammys.
Monet, known for her work as a community organizer, poet, and educator, blends different artistic mediums to enrich her writing. Her first poetry collection, my mother was a freedom fighter (2017), was nominated for an NAACP Image Award for Poetry. In 2019, she was honored with the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Award for Poetry. Her next collection, Florida Water, is set to be released by Haymarket Books in December 2024.
Tickets for Monet’s SCADshow performance are priced at $10 for SCAD Card holders (students, faculty, and staff), $25 for seniors, military personnel, and alumni, and $30 for the general public. Attendees must be 17 years or older to purchase tickets.
