Shoobridge Funeral Services is celebrating National Grandparents Day on October 6 with the launch of a new poetry competition. This initiative is inspired by a deep love for poetry and its ability to express profound emotions.
The competition reflects the founder’s personal journey with poetry. The founder recalls their first poetry competition at the 1990 Eisteddfod, held annually in Wales to coincide with St David’s Day. Winning this accolade during their final year at Ffynonbedr primary school in Lampeter marked the beginning of a lifelong passion for poetry.
Over the years, this passion has evolved, encompassing formal study during a Master’s degree and a dissertation focused on poetry. In their role as a funeral celebrant, the founder finds poetry invaluable in services, often selecting poems that resonate deeply with families. They maintain a library of poetry to assist families in finding the right words and often include an additional poem to leave a lasting impression.
The Shoobridge poetry competition invites entries from across its branches in Honiton, Exmouth, and Exeter. Participants are encouraged to submit poems that capture vivid memories and emotions.
