In a historic moment for Maryland’s literary community, spoken word artist Lady Brion has been named the state’s youngest poet laureate. The 32-year-old was honored at a ceremony on Monday, where First Lady Dawn Moore presented her with the prestigious award.
Lady Brion’s appointment is groundbreaking as she becomes the first spoken word poet to hold the title of Maryland Poet Laureate. Spoken word, also known as slam poetry, blends performance with verse, engaging audiences in a dynamic way. Lady Brion’s influence in this art form was notably showcased when she performed at the inauguration of Governor Wes Moore in 2023.
During the award presentation, First Lady Moore praised Lady Brion for using her voice to uplift marginalized communities. “Lady Brion speaks for those who have been overlooked for too long. She is a symbol of hope and an advocate for those who need someone to fight for them,” Moore said. “She will serve as a champion for all Marylanders, regardless of their background or story.”
Lady Brion’s appointment follows that of Grace Cavalieri, the state’s previous poet laureate, who held the position at 92 years old. Cavalieri, from Annapolis, was known for her introspective work inspired by historical figures such as women’s rights activist Mary Wollstonecraft and even pop culture figures like Anna Nicole Smith.
In accepting the role, Lady Brion acknowledged the legacy of another iconic Maryland Poet Laureate, Lucille Clifton, whose work celebrated Black political leaders and explored themes of Black womanhood. “It is my mission to build upon [Clifton’s] legacy,” Lady Brion said. “I aim to use the power of words to inspire dialogue and foster creativity, empathy, and understanding throughout Maryland.”
Lady Brion’s appointment marks the beginning of a new era for Maryland poetry, one that blends tradition with modern forms of expression.
