Poet-novelists Canisia Lubrin and Fawn Parker have been shortlisted for the Atwood Gibson Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize. The Writers’ Trust of Canada announced the finalists for the $60,000 award on Wednesday.
Lubrin, a writer from Whitby, Ontario, is recognized for her novel “Code Noir.” Parker, who serves as Fredericton’s poet laureate, is nominated for her book “Hi, It’s Me.”
Also on the shortlist is Sheung-King, the pen name of Richmond, B.C., and Hong Kong author Aaron Tang, for his novel “Batshit Seven,” which explores the life of a millennial during the Hong Kong protests.
The finalists include Conor Kerr from Edmonton for his novel “Prairie Edge” and Éric Chacour from Montreal for “What I Know About You,” which was translated from French by Quebec City’s Pablo Strauss.
The winner of the prize will be announced at the annual Writers’ Trust Awards on November 19. Both Kerr and Chacour have also made the long list for the Giller Prize. Meanwhile, Lubrin, Parker, and Sheung-King withdrew their names from Giller consideration due to concerns about lead sponsor Scotiabank’s investment in an Israeli arms manufacturer.
