On Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at 7:00 PM, the Indigenous Voices Series will feature Kim Shuck, a former San Francisco Poet Laureate. This family-friendly event will highlight Shuck’s poetry, which celebrates the deer, particularly those that inhabit San Francisco.
Shuck’s work explores how these resilient creatures navigate the blend of urban and natural environments. In her poetry, deer are depicted meandering under highways and along park streams. Dawn Pettigrew describes Shuck’s book, Deer Trails (from City Lights), as a blend of tradition and modernity, humor, and Indigenous perspectives. Pettigrew states, “She is kind enough to invite us all into her mind, her life, and her tribe.” Shuck has also co-authored a recent chapbook titled A-wi / Deer with Denise Low.
In addition to her poetry, Kim Shuck’s beadwork will be on display at the event.
Tickets are priced at $20. The program is curated by Denise Low.
