Saranac Village at Will Rogers will host cowboy poet Mark Munzert on Saturday, October 19, at 7:30 p.m. This event, promoted in collaboration with the Adirondack Center for Writing, brings a unique experience to the retirement community, which usually features public concerts and lectures.

“Our retirement village is a diverse community. We aim to offer a wide range of programs to ensure there is something for everyone,” said Adrien Vlach, the assistant director of events and activities.

The phrase “cowboy poet” may remind some of Baxter Black, a well-known commentator on the public radio program “Morning Edition.” Munzert spoke about his connection to Black, saying, “Baxter Black was a friend and mentor. I met him the first day I performed. I unexpectedly won a contest, which allowed me to open for Baxter. The following year, I opened shows for him in Las Vegas during the National Finals Rodeo and at the National Cattlemen’s Conference. No one compares to Baxter, especially as a humorist. I follow his advice: write what you know and be yourself.”

Munzert is a former winner of the National Poetry Rodeo. In March, he performed his poetry for WMHT Public Media in Albany on their program “A House for Arts.” The performance was later picked up and rebroadcast by over eighty affiliate stations.

The performance on Saturday is open to the public. The venue is accessible, and admission is by donation. Attendees can enjoy cookies served during the event.
