The Karachi Press Club (KPC) awarded life membership to distinguished academic, poet, and former vice-chancellor Dr. Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui on Wednesday.
A ceremony took place at the IH Burney Hall of the KPC to honor Dr. Siddiqui for his significant contributions to academia and literature.
KPC President Saeed Sarbazi expressed that granting life membership to Dr. Siddiqui was a proud moment for the press club. He acknowledged Dr. Siddiqui’s important role in guiding the youth.
KPC Secretary Shoaib Ahmed noted Dr. Siddiqui’s prominence in the country’s academic and literary circles. He highlighted that the KPC had previously awarded life membership to notable figures such as Sir Prince Karim Aga Khan, Abdul Sattar Edhi, and Faiz Ahmed Faiz.
Dr. Siddiqui shared his thoughts during the ceremony, stating that receiving life membership from KPC was a great honor. He commended the club for being a voice for the oppressed in society and praised its proactive role during difficult times in Pakistan’s history.
As a former vice-chancellor of the University of Karachi and the Federal Urdu University, Dr. Siddiqui emphasized his efforts to contribute positively to Pakistan’s higher education sector. He expressed concern over the 20 million out-of-school children in the country, stating that Pakistan’s progress depends on educating them.
Dr. Siddiqui mentioned his family’s ties to journalism and print media. He also entertained the audience by reciting his poetry.
Journalist Mazhar Abbas remarked that KPC has a strong tradition of recognizing individuals who have significantly contributed to the development of Pakistani society.
