The San Luis Obispo County Supervisors have appointed Caleb Nichols as the new County Poet Laureate. Nichols, a local writer and musician, will promote poetry within the community.
Nichols aims to spark interest in poetry through various events, including pop-ups, workshops, and readings. “I may bring some poets from out of town to do readings and showcase the larger world of poetry beyond SLO County’s borders,” he stated.
Nichols believes it is important for people to recognize poetry as one of the oldest forms of artistic expression that helps us understand the world. “I am really looking forward to connecting with many people and working with different individuals to bring poetry to the forefront of the arts in SLO County,” he said.
As a queer poet, Nichols often explores themes of identity and isolation in his work. He hopes these themes will resonate with community members who have similar experiences.
