WNY United Against Drug & Alcohol Abuse Inc. has officially opened its annual student art and poetry contest, encouraging young people to express the importance of making healthy choices over substance use. Since 2009, this initiative has invited students from kindergarten through 12th grade to share creative works that highlight positive, drug-free lifestyles.

This year’s theme, “Healthy Choices Make the Best Me,” challenges students to create artwork or poetry that reflects the benefits of choosing healthier alternatives over drugs and alcohol. For art entries, students can use any medium, including watercolors, crayons, markers, or acrylics, on paper, cardstock, or canvas. Poetry entries should be submitted on 8.5-inch-by-11-inch paper.

Entries will be judged on how effectively they convey the theme, the message’s impact, creativity, design, and craftsmanship, adjusted by age category. The deadline for submissions is November 30, with prizes awarded for the top entries: $50 for first place, $25 for second, and $20 for third.

Winning pieces will be showcased at the Fairgrounds Festival of Lights, running from November 30 through December 23, where attendees can view the young artists’ work.
