Writer Prakash Thamsuhang’s essay collection Shabdathum has been chosen for the Bimal Kriti Award–2080.
The selection was announced by the organizers, who noted that the judging committee reviewed 102 entries from Nepali-speaking writers both in Nepal and abroad.
Purna Bahadur Gurung, president of the Bimal Gurung Memorial Library, praised Shabdathum for its in-depth portrayal of indigenous culture and lifestyle tied to the Eastern identity. He stated that the essays express important indigenous values and traditions.
The organizers highlighted that the collection emphasizes cultural aspects and raises awareness about marginalized communities while delivering impactful ideas.
Bhim Chamling, the library’s secretary, described Shabdathum as rich in local essence and cultural vibrancy, sparking meaningful discussions about community and traditions.
Initially, ten works were shortlisted from the submissions.
The award will be presented to Thamsuhang on November 9 during the 33rd National Poetry Festival, coinciding with the 53rd birth anniversary of poet Bimal Gurung. The award includes a cash prize of Rs. 200,000.
Additionally, library member Chandra Gurung announced that young writer Bibek Bibas Regmi, who is active in Nepali literature and journalism from Tarahara, Sunsari, will receive the Bimal Gurung Memorial Library Young Talent Award.
On the same day, the top three poets from a pool of ten best poems will be awarded cash prizes of Rs. 21,000, Rs. 18,000, and Rs. 17,000, along with certificates.
